These recipes were submitted by supporters when we had a campaign in 2020 to collect traditional postpartum recipes from the African diaspora. a special “thank you” to everyone who submitted a recipe!

The MPJ Nutrition team composed of registered dietitians and interns tested these recipes and analyzed their nutritional values.  This is a major contribution to the preservation, validation and advancement of traditional postpartum wisdom.  an extra “thank you” to all the nutrition team members!

Sharing Black postpartum wisdom - starting with nourishment

Every traditional culture has learned through hundreds and thousands of years what will help a new mother or birthing person to rest, heal, and thrive. Our industrialized society that was built on the enslavement of Black people has suppressed this knowledge.  Let’s recover this information from our elders for future generations of Black mamas and birthing people.

How will these recipes be used?

MPJ is creating a menu based on these Black traditional recipes and is collaborating with caterers in the community to cook these dishes as part of NOURISH! to serve new parents in Black communities.  Our first successful attempt was on April 29, 2021 when Chef Allana from A Pleased Palate cooked four of these dishes for the mamas in our NOURISH! Project.
